From majestic industrial monuments to modernist architecture, hip waterside hangouts to picturesque Dutch countryside villages, Amsterdam Noord has plenty of surprises on offer. Book your trip with us here.
Amsterdam Noord has always been a place of huge contrasts between the old and ever changing new.
When shipbuilding declined in the 80s the industrial part of Amsterdam Noord became a wasteland of decrepit buildings and empty lots. In stepped squatters and artists, followed by creatives and artists, and recently the media and IT industry.
It is nowadays the creative centre of Amsterdam and the place to be. Within easy reach by free ferry it is not just a place where industrial heritage meets the 21st century. No it is also a place full of natural beauty with wide open spaces and long ranging views. A perfect escape to the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.
After a short walk inland you will get a surprising impression of “old Holland”. Charming, traditional houses are lined up on Nieuwendammerdijk and Buiksloterdijk form a complete contrast to what you saw only a few minutes ago. And hold a minute, flat landscapes, canals, the Ijmeer coast line and Amsterdam? What is missing? The bike! Yes of course, a trip to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a bike ride. And there is no better place for it than Amsterdam Noord. Just picture yourself on a warm summer’s evening riding into a traditional Dutch village set against the backdrop of Noord’s ultramodern architecture. Rest and recharge in one of many waterside cafes and restaurants before heading back to energy laden Noord. A truly glorious thing to do and far, far away from the stag doo’s and tourist traps in the city centre. Authentic and Original!
Back at the central Noord waterfront be amazed by modern, futuristic architecture and cool hang outs. Peak through the backstreets to check out amazing art and graffiti hidden in between many warehouse buildings.
Then there’s always something going on at NDSM, a former ship wharf. Festivals, art shows, music and their famous flea market for all kinds of cool junk. Check their agenda: http://www.ndsm.nl/agenda/ . This huge venue has quickly established itself as a cultural centre and one of the trendiest place to be.
And did you know that one of the largest flea market is in Noord too? The Ijhallen Market takes place on several weekends per year, so make sure you check, and attracts vintage and second hand lovers looking from all over Holland.
When sun sets check out the amazing 360 degree views from the flashy A’dam Tower . The A’dam Look Out is about 100m high and is one of the best viewing spots over Amsterdam. Afterwards take the futuristic elevator to one of the many bars, clubs and restaurants in the tower. The Moon Restaurant is one of our favourites. Set on the 19th floor it turns itself at snail speed offering you spectacular views combined with great food.
Visit one of the Noord landmark sites, the futuristically designed Eye Film museum. A great spot to watch a film by the water and learn all about the Dutch and International film history.
Noord is buzzing with creativity, energy and innovation. And so are its great many bars and clubs. Go easy and hang out by the Pllek, Amsterdam’s coolest urban beach and enjoy the panoramic views of the IJ river. Have a drink at the hip Café Ceuvel, which is all about sustainable produce and green energy. Built in a former shipyard and owned by a community the Ceuvel is much more than just a riverside cafe. It’s a workplace, a cultural centre, a community hub and a great example for green regeneration.
Visit the Tolhuistin another cultural centre which describes itself as a “cultural, artistic and culinary oasis”. Fancy trying yourself on the mic? Why don’t you book a “Hip Hop for Beginners Workshop” here and see if you can dig it. Overall a wonderful place full of good spirit and friendly minds.
And if you love your craft beer? Then book yourself on a tour at the Oedipus brewery. Enjoy their beautifully crafted beers and listen to some live music in this truly bohemian place.
In Noord a great place to chill is never far away. Head to the Noorderpark where there is always something going. Whether it’s buskers, bands playing spontaneous gigs, DJ’s, or just people coming together and having a good time. Street food stalls make sure you won’t go hungry. And the nearby Pekmarkt, a buzzing street market sells everything from quirky bargains, retro fashion to beautiful crafts. Not a chain in sight!
First of all, the free ferries leave all through the night so there is always a chance you make it back to the city centre without having to wait for too long. Taxis tend to be pricey in Amsterdam, so try to avoid. And Noord offers great accommodation for all budgets. Talk to us for a great offer first. The Sir Adam Hotel is a great choice. It is in the A’dam Tower after all and offers great value for money in luxurious retro chic surroundings. The cool Botel, yes Botel as it is a boat is fantastic for all those on a smaller budget. And if you want to stay in one of the amazing and unique hotels in the world, check out the Crane Hotel Faralda. A 5 star hotel suite built in a crane overlooking the harbour, yes a huge crane!
Alternatively you always stay in the city centre and visit Amsterdam Noord on a day trip. We recommend this especially for the first-time visitor. Or combine it! 2 nights in the centre and 1 night in Noord give you a great experience. Talk to us for your tailored Amsterdam weekend!
